Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta is situated adjacent to the northeast boundary of the City of Edmonton which is only a 15 minute drive away. The population has reached 16,793 as per the 2008 municipal census. The Fort Saskatchewan District entered history well over 200 years ago with its original industry of canoe building. In the spring of 1875, the Northwest Mounted Police built the "Fort on the Saskatchewan". It was originally known as "Sturgeon Creek Post", but the name was changed very shortly to "Fort Saskatchewan". A community began to develop adjacent to the fort. Thus, the present City of Fort Saskatchewan traces its history back to this Northwest Mounted Police fort of 1875. The city combines all the comforts of big city living with strong community values and pride. Fort Saskatchewan is proud to be a Community of Promise through the Alberta's Promise program which celebrates successes and recognizes partnerships to motivate all Albertans to raise awareness of the importance of investing in Alberta's children and youth. From shopping, dining, out door activities, golf courses, a busy business core and numerous special event activities such as parades, summer festivals, trade shows and swap meets, farmer's market, performing and visual arts displays and more, Fort Saskatchewan is a great place to live work and play.
