Burnaby consists of 98.60 square feet of land and was incorporated in 1892 while achieving full city status a century later in 1992. There are slightly over 200,000 residents residing in Burnaby representing many vastly different ethnical backgrounds. Named for Robert Burnaby after discovering and naming Burnaby Lake, Burnaby quickly became a thriving and prosperous community. Burnaby is blessed with many interconnecting parks and trails of which Deer Lake Park is the most notable. At the centre of the park is Burnaby Mountain which is home to Simon Fraser University, designed by celebrated architect Arthur Erickson and named after one of Canada’s foremost explorers. Today, Burnaby is a thriving metropolis with many indoor and outdoor activities to choose from. From the Burnaby Village Museum to the Playground of the Gods located high atop Burnaby Mountain and home to approximately 50 hand carved totems created by Nubuo Toko and his son Shusheo. The totems are located on the western slope of the mountain overlooking Coal Harbour and are intended to honor the relationship between Burnaby and its sister city in Japan, Kushiro. Burnaby is also home to the largest shopping complex in British Columbia, Metrotown Mall. Comprising of over 500 stores and restaurants, the Metrotown area is located 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver by Skytrain.
