It is believed that Campbell River is named after Dr. Samuel Campbell, Assistant Surgeon on the HMS Plumper, a British survey ship that surveyed the Johnstone Strait and the general area of the BC coast line in the 1850s and 1860s. Long known as the Salmon Capital of the World, Campbell River has a rich First Nations history. Occupying small villages up and down the coast, the First Nations People lived in harmony with nature and the life cycle of the salmon. Today, the majority of the industries located in the general vicinity of Campbell River are associated with the land. From logging the dense West Coast Forests to processing the timber at the pulp and saw mills. As well, mining is another rich resource is the area with mines for zinc, copper, lead, gold, silver and coal comprising the area. Outdoor activity is in abundance in the area. One of the main tourist attractions is the artificial reef created by the sinking of the HMCS Columbia. The sinking is located slightly off of Maud Island and with the crystal clear waters, abundant vegetation and varied ocean habitants, it is quickly becoming a destination point for beginner and experienced divers alike.
