Dawson Creek was established in 1907 by George Mercer Dawson. It was made accessible by the formation of the CPR in the area. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbour though, the Americans realized that they required access to Alaska that was not dependant on water. It was then that the Alaskan Highway was built and from then going forward, the town flourished. Today, the town is mainly dependant on agriculture, making full use of the fertile land. Other resources in the town include retail, tourism, and oil and gas. Tourism being forefront in the summer with many people traveling the Alaska Highway and beginning in Dawson Creek. In the winter, the main source of income is in the oil and gas industry with the fall out from the saturated town of Fort St. John spilling into the city. Recreational activities are also in abundance in Dawson Creek. Some of what the town has to offer are swimming, skating, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, down hill skiing, snow mobiling, mountain biking, and all terrain vehicle paths. There is also an indoor rodeo arena, and outdoor ice surface.
