The Gulf Islands are made up of 225 islands. Most are only reached by private boat but there are six which are well serviced by ferries and float planes – Salt Spring, Pender, Mayne, Galiano, Saturna and Gabriola. The Gulf Island region is often referred to as the “Salish Sea” in recognition of its original inhabitants who lived of the bounty provided by the sea and lands. Captain George Vancouver made his first sighting in 1792 where he claimed the island British Crown and referred to it as being in the ‘gulf’. It’s quite apparent looking at any map the islands are not in the gulf but the name stuck. While on Salt Spring Island, you will discover a colorful currency in circulation - but it's not the multicolored Canadian currency. These notes are Salt Spring Dollars which you can exchange with Canadian dollars. They are real money issued and administered by the Salt Spring Island Monetary Foundation. Every Salt Spring Dollar in circulation is a Canadian dollar earning deposit interest or revenue that will be spent on community projects. The Gulf Islands offer recreation such as beautiful beaches, kayaking, fishing, golf, hiking, sailing, cycling and much more.
