Queen Victoria herself gave the city of New Westminster its name, after her favorite part of London. From this naming by the Queen, the City gained its nickname, "The Royal City", and became the first city in Western Canada. The neighbourhoods that sprang up around the turn of the twentieth century still remain a charming souvenir of another age reflected in the fine period architecture of several commercial, residential and institutional buildings. Views of the Golden Ears Mountains, Mount Baker and the Strait of Georgia that gave the city its magnificent setting above the Fraser River reminds one of San Francisco with its sloping streets, waterfront views and heritage buildings. The City of New Westminster is situated in the center of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, otherwise referred to as the Lower Mainland. The City, roughly 15 square kilometers in area is only 20 km east of Vancouver. New Westminster is renowned throughout the region for the quality, creativity and innovation of its recreational programs, parks and garden displays and emerging cultural and heritage attractions.
