Banff National Park, the grand masterpiece of The Canadian Rockies. Banff National Park was established in 1885 as Canada's first National Park (third in the world) and was the birth of Canada's vast national parks system. The name "Banff" is derived from Banffshire, Scotland, the birthplace of two of the original directors of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Town of Banff has an elevation of 4,537 feet (1,383 meters) making it the highest town in Canada with a population of 8,300. The Park has in excess of 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) of hiking trails, 1,000 glaciers, 2,468 campsites, and is open all year round. The wildlife in this vast park is amazing, including moose, elk, dear, grizzly bears, black bears, coyotes, wolf, big horn sheep, and mountain goat, placidly spending most of their time out in the vast Banff National Park wilderness.
