Abbotsford was formed in the late 1800s and consists of approximately 360,000 square kilometers of land. The name Abbotsford was taken from a Maclure family friend, Harry Abbott, who at the time was the Western Superintendent of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The railway itself has been accredited for bringing the majority of the first settlers to the region when it first laid its tracks in 1885. Today, the city of Abbotsford is the fifth largest municipality in British Columbia and holds the 3rd most ethnically diverse population in Canada, with only Toronto and Vancouver having a broader ethnical population. Approximately 92% of the residents work in and around the Abbotsford region with the main industry being agriculture, followed closely by transportation, manufacturing and retail. There is also the growing industry of aerospace which is being led by Conair Aviation and followed by Cascade Aerospace. The city of Abbotsford holds three levels of public schooling monitored by school district 34 Abbotsford. There is also the University College of the Fraser Valley as well as 2 religious based institutions being the Columbia Bible College and the Summit Pacific College.
