Ripe with history, Colwood is home to the majestic Hatley Castle located on the grounds of Royal Roads University. Hatley Castle, built originally to house James Dunsmuir, premier and then later Lieutenant Governor of Canada was acquired by the Canadian Armed Forces in 1941 and used in part by the Royal Roads Military College. The college closed in the early 1990’s and then re-opened in 1995 as Royal Roads University. Colwood is also home to Fort Rodd Hill National Historical Park which was once operational as a coastal artillery site operating from 1878 to 1956. Fort Rodd Hill’s main function during the World Wars was to be the first line of defense against any attacks on Victoria and the Royal Naval Base. Also situated at Fort Rodd Hill is the Fisgaard Lighthouse currently being used as a museum to display artifacts, exhibits and display panels. Colwood has many recreational options including 3 golf courses, the Juan De Fuca Recreational complex, and Bear Mountain Arena. As well, the Galloping Goose Trail also runs through Colwood. If water slides are your thing, then you will enjoy the All Fun Water Park which is located right beside Western Speedway and is also home to go carts, mini golf and batting cages. In the past decade, Colwood has vastly expanded its retail operations including many “big box” stores such as Costco, and Home Depot to name a couple.
